Welcome to Leicestershire Schutzhund Club

Leicestershire Schutzhund Club is a complete training facility for German shepherd dogs, owners and breeders. We offer training in tracking, obedience, protection and ring craft for all German shepherd dogs. We are in a superb central location with superb facilities so you can enjoy your day.

Ring craft is essential training for dogs who want to excel in the show ring.

Schutzhund keeps your German shepherd true to the origin of the breed.

Training your dog in both, show and work gives you the complete German shepherd.

Schutzhund is the most challenging, rewarding and fun form of training you can do with your dog.

It was invented in Germany in the early 1900s to test German shepherd dogs for three skills:

  • Tracking Ability

  • Obedience

  • Ability to protect

Leicestershire Schutzhund Club is open to dogs of all breeds and is a safe and fun way to deepen the rapport you have with your dog as you teach him how to:

  • Track and find different articles

  • Walk to heel

  • Retrieve a dumbell over a jump and hurdle

  • Play with a helper in a game of tug

Our training methods are purely motivational so your dog enjoys the game. If you watch the short video below, you'll see how much fun the dog is having:

Schutzhund testimonial:

I recently celebrated my 50th. My family (Wife and 3 grown up daughters) decided to give me a birthday present that I will never forget and that was to spend a weekend with Steve and Claire from K9 Consultants, watching dog training sessions, observing techniques, asking 100's of questions and being a helper on Schutzhund, as a dog lover this was an ideal and perfect present for me.

My wife Caroline and myself met Steve on Saturday morning at an agreed location 10 mins before he was due to take his 1st dog training session of the day. Steve introduced us to his clients for that session. All the clients had dogs with behavioural issues, ranging from insecurity (rescue dog) to aggressive behaviour. This did not seem to phase Steve as he displayed a very calm, but assertive energy which rippled through the pack.' Steve had his own 2 dogs with him to help. I cannot speak highly enough of 'Sylvia & Kai.' He spent time with each client addressing and correcting issues that they had with their dogs, he demonstrated simple but effective techniques that had instant results, the client was happy, the dog(s) were happy, job done. I am by nature a cynical person, I was impressed by what I saw.

We observed two further training sessions that day both had similar results. Clients that we chatted to all spoke very highly of Steve, you could see why.

Sunday was Schutzhund... I was really looking forward to today. 3 disciplines to observe, Tracking, Obedience, and Protection. Members of the Schutzhund club met at around 10am, some had travelled over an hour or so to be there, in addition there were families with young children as well, the day already had a community feel about it. The dogs looked and sounded enthusiastic.
The tracks were laid, each dog had his turn to 'Track' which was observed by the group, both the handler and dog were encouraged and supported by everyone watching. This is a club that meets every week so you can see progress that's being made by the dog, which is obviously rewarding.

Next we went to a different location to concentrate on the Obedience and Protection disciplines. All the handlers were instructed by Steve as to what he wanted them to do, and again one by one they carried out their instructions closely observed by Steve, you could see the handlers and the dogs really enjoying themselves, a real sense of achievement was had by all.

We took a break for Tea, Coffee, Soft drinks and Bacon Rolls which were provided by Claire and Chris...thank you ladies...

The moment I had been waiting for had arrived, the Protection discipline. As crazy as this may sound I've always wanted to experience being 'Bitten' by a dog that's been trained to bite. Very few people will experience that feeling unless you are a dog handler/trainer/helper or you are a naughty person. As I do not consider myself a 'naughty person it is very unlikely that I will be in that position, however Steve very kindly allowed me to be a helper.

Steve took centre stage and instructed the handlers what was required and what was expected from them and their dogs. As each dog came out you could tell they were eager to play,' Steve ably assisted by Richard donned the protective sleeve and went to work, it was awesome to watch, the dogs were disciplined, obedient and above all, controlled.
It was my turn to don the protective sleeve, I felt somewhat more relaxed now after having observed how disciplined the dogs were. I went and stood in the hide. For my induction Steve introduced me to the biggest dog of the day Yago...I heard the command 'Find'.. the next thing I know I'm staring at a 80lb chunk of solid muscle barking directly at me ensuring that I do not move, Steve makes his way round to the hide, instructs me further on what he wants me to do and what is about to happen and the BANG!! my first bite', it nearly sends me flying back into the hide, the power of the bite' is incredible. Yago releases his bite, I am then instructed to run away, the chase is on, not one that I'm ever going to win, I could hear Yago's footsteps, I could hear Yago breathing...BANG!! he got me. What a feeling.

I was allowed to be 'bitten' another 6 times by different dogs. Each dog was under Steve's control and did exactly what they were instructed to do, even 15 month old Jake who was very eager to play.

It has been a fabulous experience from start to finish, watching Steve at Dog Training sessions, he is impressive and does get results, and observing Schutzhund, not only is it wonderfully rewarding for the dogs and the handlers it's a great social gathering as well. We have enjoyed ourselves Steve and Claire, thank you for making us feel welcome and part of the group.
